GETTING TO BHUTAN BY LAND
Traveling to/from Bhutan overland
Travel the expanse of the country on an overland journey.
If you are exploring India or simply want to diversify your trip, there are two locations in which you can enter overland: Phuentsholing at the border of Jaigon, West Bengal or Samdrup Jongkhar at Assam.
The nearest airport to Phuentsholing is Bagdogra (airport code IXB), also in the Indian state of West Bengal. The driving distance is 170 km over Indian roads, or approximately 4 hours of driving time. The cheapest way to travel this route is via taxi but we can also pick you up, or drop you off respectively, for additional cost.
Entering or exiting Bhutan via Phuentsholing is a recommended choice for your travel plans/routing as the drive is a relaxing way to see more of the country, and also allows the opportunity to see the immediate contrast in culture and pace of life between India and Bhutan. The 6-hour drive to both Paro and Thimphu from the border takes you from the lush green tea gardens of India through windy mountainous roads and into the heart of Bhutan; the entire journey offers breathtaking views of waterfalls and continually changing scenery.
SAMDRUP JONGKHAR (EASTERN BHUTAN)
Formerly open only for exiting, Samdrup Jongkhar is now open for entry and exit. If you plan to travel throughout Bhutan (west to east), you may find it easier and time saving to leave here into the Indian state of Assam. Or, if you have a limited amount of time, this provides fantastic opportunity to visit remote, less explored areas without the need for venturing into the western and central areas.
The nearest airport is Guwahati in Assam, approximately a 3 1/2-hour drive, which has connections with several of India’s major domestic hubs. For your safety, entry/exit here is subject to stability in the Assam region.
